Project “DatErr” offers a new absolute (10Be) chronology for the last SIS decay in NW Poland. The new 10Be ages will be interpreted with existing TCN data and other chronologies (14C, OSL) and together they will allow us to build a comprehensive chronology for the last SIS`s southern sector. Therefore, the “DatErr” project will result in:
1. The first direct dating of the last SIS maximum extent in Poland.
2. Getting the first surface exposure ages of Poznan (Frankfurt) Phase of the last SIS recession in NW Poland.
3. New 10Be ages for the Pomeranian moraines between the Odra Ice Lobe area and NE Poland.
4. The first complete 10Be chronology of the last SIS recession from the local Last Glacial Maximum to the final deglaciation of NW Poland.
5. The calculation of the last SIS retreat rates for three meridional transects along the Vistula Ice Lobe, the Odra Ice Lobe and in between them, based on new and existing 10Be data.
6. Bridging the gap between the “western” and the “eastern” Peribaltic regions in terms of surface exposure ages of the last SIS recession.
The new chronology, together with existing data, will allow us to confidently reconstruct the dynamics of the former ice margin along its full southern front as well as evaluate the role of the former ice sheet with respect to existing paleoclimatic records (e.g. ice cores, lake sediments). It is important because we want to understand how land-based ice sheets react to improving climatic conditions. Are they in phase or out of phase with surrounding climate? Present ice-sheets (Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets) are still in contact with their marine environment at the moment, but under global warming conditions they will soon become entirely land-based. The question then will be to find an analogue to understand how the ice sheets will behave. We suggest that information on the mode of ice sheet retreat (i.e. climatic forcing only/internal glacial dynamics/local conditions) can be derived from the last SIS record.
The NGRIP ice core stable isotopic record for the period of the last SIS maximum expansion and retreat in NW Poland (~25-13 ka). Periods of small-scale climate warming between DO1 and DO2 are marked (red arrows) and could potentially correspond to time when the SIS would have responded to climate signal. Isotopic values are expressed in ‰ with respect to Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (V-SMOW). Source: Nord Greenland Ice Core Project members (2004) and http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov.
